Central America and Mexico

Central America, including countries like Guatemala and Honduras, along with Mexico, are notable coffee producers. Mexico’s coffee production was forecasted at 4.1 million 60 kg bags for the 2023/24 marketing year3The United States is the top export market for Mexican coffee, with exports reaching 2.7 million bags in 2024/254. Coffee exports are crucial for these economies, with Honduras’ coffee exports contributing significantly to its GDP. Mexico also imports coffee, primarily from Vietnam and the United States, to meet domestic consumption5.

Caribbean

The Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, is known for its premium coffee, such as Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, which can sell for $50-60 per pound6. Coffee exports from the Caribbean are relatively small compared to other regions but are highly valued. In 2022, Latin America and the Caribbean’s coffee exports were valued at $18.77 billion7. Coffee plays a vital role in the economies of these islands, contributing to both export revenue and tourism.

Africa

Africa is home to some of the world’s most distinctive coffee varieties, with Ethiopia and Uganda being the leading exporters. In 2022, Ethiopia’s coffee exports were valued at $1.5 billion, while Uganda’s were nearly $813 million8Coffee is Ethiopia’s top export, accounting for about 30-35% of its total export earnings9The coffee sector is a significant part of the GDP in these countries, with Ethiopia’s coffee industry supporting the livelihoods of 25% of its population9.

Asia

Asia, particularly Vietnam and Indonesia, is a major coffee-producing region. Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee exporter, with exports valued at $3.37 billion in 20221. Indonesia also plays a significant role, exporting a substantial amount of coffee. Coffee exports are crucial for these economies, contributing significantly to their GDP. Vietnam’s coffee industry, for example, is a major part of its agricultural sector, which accounts for about 14% of its GDP1.
